Friends of Pontardawe Arts Centre (FoPAC) is pleased to announce the completion of a major new socio‑economic impact study examining the contribution of Pontardawe Arts Centre to the community and economy of Neath Port Talbot.
Commissioned by the Friends of Pontardawe Arts Centre and funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with support from Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council, the report provides the most detailed assessment to date of the Centre’s economic value, social impact, and strategic importance to the region.
A snapshot of what the report reveals
The study confirms what many in the community already know: Pontardawe Arts Centre is a vital cultural anchor for the Swansea Valley and a powerful driver of wellbeing, economic activity, and community life.
Key highlights include:
- £771,759 of total economic impact generated in 2022–23, against £150,000 of public funding — a Return on Investment of 5.15, meaning every £1 invested creates £5.15 of value for the local economy.
- Strong social impact, with 85% of survey respondents rating the Centre’s effect on their wellbeing and social life as 4 or above on a 0–6 scale.
- A deeply valued community hub, praised for its welcoming atmosphere, inclusive programming, and exceptional staff team.
- Early evidence of major benefits from the new cinema and redevelopment, with 92% of respondents saying the cinema will encourage them to visit more often.
- Significant support for local businesses, with increased footfall, hospitality spending, and positive feedback from traders across the town.
- A strategic role in Neath Port Talbot’s cultural future, with opportunities for audience development, volunteering, business partnerships, and expanded community engagement.
The report also highlights the Centre’s role in reducing social isolation, supporting children and adults with additional needs, and providing high‑quality cultural opportunities for people of all ages.
The ‘Friends’ extends its thanks to all staff, volunteers, partners, local businesses, and the hundreds of community members who contributed their views, stories, and data to this important piece of work.
